Who we are
Anya: We are a young couple (approaching 40 is still young!), no children but we've always had dogs. Currently, we have 4 dogs: 3 rescue greyhounds and Shiva, our faithful labrador-boarder collie mix.
I have loved dogs for as long as I can remember: when I was 10 I used to walk 2 lively Dalmatians who lived down the road from us. That was my first job - and I never stopped! I have walked and looked after countless dogs and cats since.
Adrian: Same here. We've always had dogs in our family, dogs of all sizes and ages. I loved them all, but my fondest memory is of Pip, a happy & lively London Mongrel with a really loving nature, robust constitution and the ability to eat almost anything. She ate a tub of Nivea creme once...
Anya: All dogs like good, honest communication and a good sense of humour - one of the reasons we are so fond of their company. And because of our own dogs, dogsitting has always been an important issue for us. They are all rescue dogs, and they really do not enjoy going back to kennels. For them, kennels bring back painful memories of loveless lives.
Adrian: As a child, I wondered why we never went abroad for our holidays. Now I know that my parents just did not want to leave the dogs behind! And now we're the just same. We go to Cornwall or Wales and we take the dogs with us. But there are times when it's just not possible. This is how we first came to think of being Pet Carers.
Anya: Yes: we thought that there must be so many people who have this problem. What do you do when you cannot be there? Your cat, your dog, your rabbit, horse... - whom can you trust to look after them? It's not just about food - animals need someone to be there with them, for them, not just drop food in a bowl and change the water. Someone who talks their language, knows their needs.
Adrian: Dogs are no different from people in that respect: they need care, love, a presence, not just looking after. When we care for a cat or a dog, we treat the animal as part of our own animals. We care for them the way we care for ours. They're extended family.
Anya: For the dogs which we walk, it's like a holiday. They meet lots of new mates, there's plenty of socialising, then there's the great walks and the cuddles and the attention...
Adrian: Yes. It's a buzz! I've worked with some happy people in my time, but working with dogs beats it all! They are happy whatever the weather, whatever the time of day. Always up for a good walk and a snuffle. They're great characters, too! I love my job.
