Hound Dog Days - Dog Behaviour & Dog Psychology

We know that you may think: I've heard that promise before! Maybe you have already paid for the work of another behaviourist and the results were not very encouraging. Maybe you have tried other things and found that nothing did work. It's not rare that clients are at first feel sceptic when we assure them that we really can help them! That's why we have asked a few of our clients to talk - in front of a camera - about the work we did for them and their dogs. Have a look and a listen and make up your own mind! When we first came to meet Angela, John and Lorraine, a warm-hearted, animal-loving family from London, they described their two gorgeous and lively white boxers, Henry and Major, as the perfect dogs - except for that one issue: their aggressiveness around other dogs. John jokingly comments that, back then, they were feeling like "park lepers" when they took their dogs for a walk in their local park!
Devoted to their dogs, this lovely family had been trying for many years (8 years to be precise) to resolve or at least improve on the situation. During this time, they had seen a number of other dog behaviourists and trainers, but without success, and when they finally contacted us, they had all but given up hope that things might still change.

Fees & Charges for Dog Behaviour & Psychology Sessions

What is included:

Dog Behaviour/Dog Psychology - First session

£100

Covers: the first session of work with your dog(s). This typically takes around 2-3 hours but we do not limit our sessions in time - it takes as long as it takes! The fee also covers free follow-up advice over the phone should any questions arise at a later stage. We always love to hear how our clients are getting on!

Any follow-up or refresher sessions with the same dog/dogs

£80

Covers: each follow-up session with the same dog(s). Rarely do people request follow-up sessions but if you need one, it's cheaper than the first session and again, it's not limited in time - we'll be there for as long as it takes!

Half-day of Dog Behavioural Group Training

£160

Covers: Half a day's worth of Group Training - either morning or afternoon. Typically booked for groups of dog walking buddies, entire families, groups of friends or neighbours - when more than one dog household come together on a regular basis; by households with large numbers of dogs; also booked by kennel owners and veterinary practices and fire stations to improve staff's understanding of dog behaviour.
The great plus of this type of consultation is that everyone listens in on everyone else's questions and answers. So everyone learns a great deal and has a lot of fun at the same time. Suitable for groups of up to 4 different households.
Required: a space large enough to accomodate a group of dogs with their owners. Access to some outdoor space nearby. Ring or email for details!

Full day of Dog Behavioural Group Training

£300

Covers: a full day's worth of training in a group setting. This is the best choice if the group of dogowners includes more than 4 or 5 different households; for dog kennels, veterinary practices; fire stations; etc. as staff training days.
Required: a space large enough to accomodate a group of dogs with their owners. Access to some outdoor space nearby. Ring or email for details!

Public Training - Half days or Full days

We are booked by institutions and private companies alike to broaden their staff's understanding of dog behaviour. Veterinary practices, charities, fire stations, kennels to only name a few! Schools and educational institutions equally employ us to teach children how to behave safely and appropriately around dogs, and to understand the fundamental principles of dog behaviour. What should your child do if s/he crosses path with an aggressive dog? We teach them what to look for and how to read the signs. We also run what we call "anti-cruelty to animals" classes for children and adolescents in neighbourhoods affected by this type of problem. Cruelty towards animals is a reliable predictor of sociopathic and psychopathic behaviour in later life - and anti-cruelty classes are a good way of helping to combat these tendencies in at-risk groups.

Some of our clients live in far-away places in the UK or abroad and whilst we are happy to travel as and when our diary allows it, you will have to pay the travel cost (at cost). The cost of travel is payable ahead of time of travel.

Commonly experienced behavioural issues in Dogs

We work both in one-to-one or group settings, and we work with both private households and private or public organisations, such as schools, dog kennels or veterinary practices - all in the interest of teaching humans to read dog behaviour accurately, i.e. to understand it from the dog viewpoint.

We have an excellent track record in solving problem behaviour - we have never yet come across a case where we could not help! Here are some of the problems we have successfully addressed in the past include:

Aggression issues - examples include

aggression towards members of the human family
aggression towards other dogs, both inside and outside the family home
aggression towards anyone entering the home
aggressing, chasing, stalking cats and other animals

Boundary and Leadership issues, such as

understanding a dog's view on pack hierarchy
how to re-establish yourself as your dog's leader
how to re-establish the correct family hierarchy, with the humans on top and the dog(s) at the bottom of the pack
how to resolve aggression towards certain members of the family

Anxiety issues, such as

dogs not wanting to leave the house at all
dogs being overly anxious on walks and keen to return home at the slightest 'incident'
how to act around dogs with a shy, fearful disposition so as to improve the situation
ways of empowering dogs with a fearful temperament

Separation anxiety

where the dog becomes very anxious when separated from its owners, even if they are only upstairs
how to help your dog over separation anxiety
how to prevent howling and barking

Phobia issues (where a dog begins to focus anxious-obsessively on a specific object, sound or activity), examples include:

fear of loud noises such as gunshots and thunder
fear of the car
afraid of going out in the dark
fear of specific objects
fear of specific situations

Obsessional behaviour - examples include:

obsessively tailchasing
chasing and following light reflections
licking or chewing
obsessive fascination for TV or radio
chasing tyres (chasing moving vehicles)

Excessive and inappropriate behaviour, for example

excessive chewing/licking of dog's own body parts (usually feet)
destructive behaviours - excessive chewing, scratching, digging etc. in house & garden
excessive barking, howling or crying
frequent rolling in faeces and/or dead animal remains
"leg humping" and other inappropriate behaviour towards members of the household

We also give advice on all sorts of other issues, e.g.

how to raise a puppy to be a healthy, happy dog
how to successfully toilet train
how to find good alternative therapies and natural remedies for dogs
foods and supplements that support health and healing in your dog
all sorts of other issues - we have a lot of experience and sometimes a short phone call or email is all it takes!

Note: We are happy to offer free advice especially if your situation is urgent, however our rule of thumb is: if it takes longer than a couple of minutes to explain, we will ask that you book a consultation. You will never regret it!
